I loved Step Forward's 10 Song EP when it came out back in 2006 and I still listen to it on a regular basis today. And I like to think I keep my finger on the pulse when it comes to punk and hardcore, but somehow the band's nine-song, self-titled follow-up managed to squeak by me. Apparently some of these songs were written in '09 and circulated on a tape at shows, but this new EP comprises the definitive versions of them.
Well, the new 7-inch definitely sounds a lot like the last one: fast, raw, aggressive straight edge hardcore. And with a band like Step Forward, more of the same is a good thing. These guys play hardcore. They're not the type of group who's going to flip their sound around and put out an indie rock record. And we should all be thankful for that. I will say that the recording quality leaves a bit to be desired, but then I want to slap myself in the face for saying that. It's a fast, fun hardcore record and if caliber of sound is where your mind immediately goes then this is not for you.
If you ever wanted proof that Boston was and continues to be a hotbed for great hardcore bands, look no further than Step Forward's latest record.
