I Was Never A Boy Scout [EP] (2015)

Dingus. feels like a perfect mash-up of two of my favourite indie/emo bands - Sorority Noise and It Looks Sad. There's a lot to take in in these six songs on I Was Never A Boy Scout -- which show a lot of angst and garage-sounding melodramatics that offer a lot of promise.

There's a very nice spin on their sound, lazy and lacking urgency over slow mellow melodic chords, but it's how tracks like "Loser" and "Jack Campbell" unfold that really pull you in. Think of Nai Harvest at their most emo. They use a lot of quiet-loud guitar dynamics to overcome the pop-punk tag I've heard them labeled with in the past and I think this is actually a great step forward. Their lyrics are deeper, they're still catchy but this style feels more forward-thinking with room for evolution.  And if you're looking for them to dial things back down, then you'll get a lot of that on "Trash" - lighthearted, honest and a sprawl of acoustic vulnerability. Then again, that's what this debut EP's about. Brutal exposure of one's soul. There are a few rough edges and kinks but it's worth noting Dingus. Sorority Noise's Cam Boucher would definitely get a kick outta this!
