I have been following Esco Chris for about 9 years now, and each time he releases new music it gets better and better. From his early days with the creation of Los Angeles early reggae and ska cover group, The Pedal-Tones to solo performances at the iconic Bluebeat lounge to his reggae ska rocksteady group from Chico, Boss 501, Esco Chris has been one active individual in California’s 4th wave movement.
Since 2012, he has been releasing DIY albums calling himself “The Reggae Imposter†focusing on early reggae instrumentals and sometimes throwing in a vocal tune.
Now he is back with a new album called Tropical TV. 13 tracks of classic sounding early reggae, rocksteady, and ska that is perfect for fans of Trojan Records and Pama Records. He has included special guest musicians from Gainesville, FL rocksteady, ska, reggae group, The Duppies. This album reminds me of a lot of different groups. Tracks like Cool Feelings and No Running Boy reminds me of The Slackers meets The Aggrolites. Tracks like Love and Affection and Rollin on remind me of Chris Murray meets Westbound Train. The album is one of his better releases. Although he uses an older formula, on the album, he finds new ways to make those things interesting. Overall I would recommend this to any one that enjoys early reggae, rocksteady and ska music. Â
