The Wet Boys are a folk punk band from Virginia. It's hard to describe their sound, because they have so much going on for them. Beautiful sounding acoustic guitars are always heard, and they throw in a bunch of unique instruments that you wouldn't usually hear from a punk inspired band. Their country and Americana influences are also heard, but they add a darker twist to them. The vocals definitely define this release, as they're insanely deep and gruff sounding. They remind me of the vocals of Dicky Barrett. The band is always super tight, and the performance and production are both amazing. There's a total of three songs on this, but the last song is an alternate mix of the first song. It starts off with "Run & Hide." This song tells an interesting story that's actually pretty funny. You can tell that these guys are gifted storytellers and musicians. This song is pure fun, and is the perfect opener to the EP. "Life on the Mines" follows, which is actually super dark, and tells a horrifying story of a man shooting miners. The chorus is catchy, while having a hopeless feel to it. The sentiment and vibe this song has makes it my favorite on the EP. "Run & Hide (Alt. Mix)" finishes things off, and it's exactly what the title says it is. There's nothing insanely different about this mix, but it's cool that they threw it in there. This EP is definitely an interesting, fresh listen, and the two songs that are on here are great tracks. There's that feeling of wanting more, which makes the two songs seem like just the beginning. A great release from these guys, but I'm predicting there are better things to come from them.
