On their new EP Home Remedy Brisbane, Australia’s Columbus deliver four energized songs in all of 10 minutes. Believe me that is a good thing. The first song “Downsides of Being Honest†almost made a believer out of me, but the gang vocalized sappy lyrics (“You never called!â€) seemed so misplaced that it took this fast paced piece of punk and turned it into cheese.
It’s not a total disaster and there is a lot of potential here, such as some nice sounding clean guitar at the beginning of “Toss & Turn,†but in only four songs these guys actually manage to be somewhat repetitive. Not only are they repetitive musically but the songs are all love songs, not inherently a bad thing, and that really only serves to bring the energy factor down a bit.
The redeeming factor is how quickly it’s over. Like I said there really is a lot of potential here, but it definitely isn’t realized on Home Remedy.
