Lights (2014)

Effervescence records

As I searched the Punknews album reviews, I was surprised that Forus 'Lights' had not been reviewed. Until now, if you haven't heard of Forus I strongly recommend that you do. 'Lights' came out in 2014 and this is an album I come back to on a weekly basis at the very least.

Forus reminds me of Propagandhi, a Wilhelm scream and protest the hero but with their own sound. If you like fast skate punk, technical guitars and bass, drumming that will make you air drum every track. Then this band is for you.

The drumming on Lights is phenomenal, from the laid back beats to the technical time changing, double kicking and skilful use of cymbals.

The guitar playing is also fantastic. The skills of the dual guitars is present in every song giving making each song interesting. There is a great balance between driving chords and guitar noodling over the fret board.

If All Else Fails (breathe in) (breathe out) needs to be listened as a whole to get the full emotional journey of song. Focusing on losing someone to cancer.

Beardy crook also another highlight, starting with acoustic guitar and vocals and building to a full assault of the ears.

The time changes in Crisis Management of the Special Kind show the excellent musicianship of Forus.

My only complaint of the album is it seems too short. Just as you start to strap yourself in, it is over. The silver lining is you can start the eargasm again. Do yourself a favour and get this album today.
