Alkaline Trio is one of the few bands I consider "Pop/Punk", that I also find enjoyable. What mostly sets these guys apart from the afore mentioned genre is their much darker, emo-esque lyrics.
This album is a compilation of the out of print 7 inches, 'For Your Lungs Only', 'I Lied My Face', and 'Sundials. Also four extra tracks from various compilations are thrown into the mix. It's pretty much what any oldskool Alk3 fan could ask for.
The first track Goodbye Forever starts with a catchy riff and pretty much sets the tone for the rest of the album.
'This Is Getting over You' is the first song on the album where Dan takes over on lead vocals. Dan really shines on this track with a nice bass line towards the end of the song.
'Bleeder' is one of my favorite Alkaline Trio tracks of all time. Nice emotional song with an amazing climax and ending.
'I Lied My Face Off' I've never heard such an angry song from Alkaline Trio. Dan takes over vocals again and you can feel more emotion in his vocals than ever.
'My Friend Peter' Sad, depressing lyrics. But also has a very cheery, happy type feel. Contains my favorite line of theirs, "...And I'll drink 23 more to whipe this stupid smile off my fucking face". Great song.
Snake Oil Tankers The shortest track on the album. Very catchy chorus.
Southern Rock This song was also released on their debut album, Goddamnit. Didn't really like it too much on that album and my feelings remain the same here. Lyrically, it's not too bad though.
Cooking Wine One of the best songs on this compilation. I love how all three guys chime in during the chorus.
For Your Lungs Only My least favorite track here. I'm not sure why. It just doesn't clique with me.
Exploding Boy My personal favorite on the album. It's a cover of a Cure song. And it definitely has that Cure feel to it. Instrumentally, it's the best Alkaline Trio song I have ever heard.
Sun Dials Has a very fast feel to it. Slows down at the end of each chorus, only to pick up with the fast riff again. It's not a bad a song. Just doesn't really leave much of an impression on you.
Nose Over Tail Great song. Great writing. Especially love the part where the instruments drop out and Matt says "I'd love to rub your back...". One of the best on the album.
'97 This song has many layers to it. Great sybolism used. The perfect way to close out the album.
If you were a fan of the first two Alkaline Trio albums, then chances are you'll really dig this one. These Chicago natives really know how to make their music.
