I think I can speak for a majority of people who say that there has been a drought of refreshing and powerful stright-forward rock music as of late. This CD will make those people very, very happy. And so I feel it my duty to tell you about these guys before MTV gets a hold of them.
Meriwether's sound is familiar and yet unique in its own right. Make Your Move aims for more of a punk rock sound, but also blends elements of refreshing (not annoying) pop and emo that keep you on your toes. The CD begins things with the somewhat pointless "Make Your Move" intro, but then picks things up immediately afterward with "Wash Up, We're Having Company." The hooks and rock keep coming even through Meriwether's mellower tracks like "B Quiet," "Girl in Mexico" and "Pheonix Down," and come off quite beautifully. "Aye Julian" is possibly one of the best tracks to come out this year. Guitar and angst driven, the vocals soar and before too long I found myself singing along.
It is not only the music that I find incredible about Meriwether, but their lyrical honesty. It's not pointless angst or emo lyrics, but honest and meaningful. That alone makes Make Your Move noteworthy. Combined with some addictive rock and you've got yourself an great album.
The only thing that really takes away from the sheer power of Make Your Move is the length. There are a few of slower tracks such as "Street Legal Shootout" and the closer track "And Tonic E.R.," which aim for 'anthemic' but fall a bit short of the mark. They are not bad tracks, but tend to drag and just con't measure up to the caliber of the rest of the albulm.
Meriwether is truly a talented band and will give us much to look forward to from their future releases.
