Boiling Over

Trash City [7 inch] (2009)

Lifeline

Boiling Over do a pretty tight, fast take on hardcore with plenty of '80s influence and only one, lone wailing solo ("Humanity Is Fucked"). Thanks to a crisp recording, though, this 7" never sounds dated or anachronistic in any real way. They kinda remind me of that defunct SanFran hardcore band Right On, only a lot faster. Making a Minor Threat comparison always feels really weak and lazy but I can honestly hear it in the guitars sometimes, too.

While these dudes sound angry at one thing or the another they seem to have a sense of humor about it. I laugh every single time I hear their singer enthusiastically yell "I wanna fuck the American dream!" in, well, "American Dream." Another standout is the title track, while "These Colors Don't Crust," the EP's longest track at 1:41 and comparatively fleshed out when listening to it in this context, sounds refreshing with its more driven, repetitive refrains and closing dance part.

Trash City is a surely enjoyable ten minutes, urgent and frantic as hell while managing to still be a little playful and scrappy as hell. Too bad they've already broken up.
