Here's your question and answer of the week from the Punknews Formspring:

Q: Does a band have a legitimate complaint about being labeled "orgcore?"

A: I don't think bands openly dislike it but it's probably an issue more with lazy fan comparisons. Like, say you're a band like Red City Radio. First, my condolences. But imagine you spend all this time writing and recording a record. You bust your ass, you spend months fine tuning the songs, recording them, rerecordinging them, mastering them, blah blah blah. Then you put the record out and people just go, "Oh Ordcore." Which is vague, and potentially lumps you in with bands you A) Sound nothing like and B) May not even like.

It's like the old line, "I like every kind of music, except rap and country." Well, that makes a general assumption that all music under those umbrellas sound the same. But it goes the same for "Orgcore". Bands just want active listeners.

Here's your question and answer of the week from the Punknews Formspring:

Q: If you could change one thing about punk, what would it be?

A: As weird as it sounds, the hard line ethical and moral stances some artists or fans take. That isn't to say I don't love being a part of a genre/scene where a lot of the bands a left leaning folks but hearing disparaging things about people who have minor differences that they don't impose on others is always hard. I know several people who have claimed to stop listening to (or avoid listening to begin with) artists like Chuck Ragan or Gaslight Anthem because of Chuck and Brian's religious beliefs. Or the in fighting that occurs when artists may believe something similar but approach it from different ways. For example I don't know anyone (in the punk scene) who supports homophobia or sexism but I know people who have gotten into conflicts because one band is "too PC" or "not doing enough to support the cause".

While I feel a lot of good comes out of the more progressive tilt of the genre as a whole I also feel that too often bands or fans spend too much time focusing on petty differences rather than focusing on what they agree on and what they can do to better those causes. In the grand scheme of things is Anti-Flag that different from Propaghandi? Maybe to the small segment of people who really focus on these bands but to 99% of the population of earth, no, they aren't. And while I think focusing on what we have in common is a way to make the moral end of punk more function (i.e. maybe actually influence something),ignoring minor differences (especially ones that the artists doesn't force on listeners) is something that I think will just make things more enjoyable for everyone involved.

Here's your question and answer of the week from the Punknews Formspring:

Q: How do you feel about people shouting out songs for bands to play? One time I saw American Steel open for Alkaline Trio and someone shouted play "Stupid Kid". true story.

A: Eh, I'm kind of on the fence. I know, deep down in my rotten soul, that it makes very little difference. For every one time a band has played a song at the behest of a shouting fan there are probably thousands of times that doesn't happen and that guy just annoys everyone around then. You need to figure, most of the time (especially if the band has a lot of releases) the band has a set list figured out in advance and has been practicing a select number of songs. Maybe it's more than just the songs on that evening's set list but it's probably not their entire catalog. So there's a good chance they couldn't really even play the song you're shouting and if they did, it would probably be awful.

However, Justin and I did see Chuck Ragan one time and got really drunk and kept shouting for him to play "Cursing Concrete" and he did and it ruled…So I guess when it does happen, it's kind of amazing.

Q: What is Schultz doing now that he's no longer Reviews Editor?

True story (as humorous as it sounds) Schultz has a job with Bridge 9 now. I have no idea what he does over their but I imagine it's Manager of Circle Pitting or Associate Chair of Keeping it Real or something. Guy deserves all the happiness in the world, I just hope one day he collects all that change he's been picking up.

Q: Have you ever hated a band's name but liked the music they made?

Yes. It's always hard to get passed the awful named band that is actually really good. One of my recent experiences was with Imadethismistake, who were a great band with an awful name. I always try to remind myself that unless I get their t-shirt or a tattoo the name shouldn't matter.
