Henry Rollins

Rollins clarifies one of his secret projects

Henry rollins recently announced that he was at Inner Ear studios with Ian MacKaye working on a project. That set the internet on fire with people guessing what the project was. Late last week, Rollins issued clarification: "Before anything else, I think I need to clear something up. Last week I told you that I went up to DC and mixed some tracks with Ian MacKaye at Inner Ear Studios in beautiful Arlington, VA. The tracks we mixed were not a collaborative effort, besides the mixing itself. I am not on the tape. Ian is not on the tape. Neither of us are on the tape. What we were working on was a demo, recorded in 1979, by a legendary Punk band that recently came into my possession. I had the tape baked and transferred by the very capable Pete Lyman at Infrasonic Sound in Nashville and had him send the tracks to Ian so he could take them to Inner Ear and get them loaded in. The mix came together quite quickly because it was only eight tracks on one inch tape and the quality of the sounds were so good out of the gate, very little had to be done. The performances are fantastic. Ian and I played the mixes over and over days later and kept in touch to see if either one of us had any notes as to anything that needed to be changed and neither of us could find anything wrong with the work. I contacted a member of the band and asked if I could release the tracks. I got permission and started preparing the tracks for release. We sent the final mixes to Pete, who mastered them and they’re really good. I’m going to be working in collaboration with Larry Hardy at In The Red Records and we’ll be releasing the demo as soon as possible, as a four song 12”. You might already know that Larry and I have been putting out very cool and often extremely rare tracks on 7” and 12” records over the last few years. In fact, we have a great one at the pressing plant right now. Once it’s back, I’ll tell you all about it. It’s super cool."

Meanwhile, Rollins has at least one other secret project that has been gestating for a while. Rollins has dropped hints here and there, stating that the project involves some sort of warehouse physical location, a substantial part of his assets, and a greta deal of research. We'll keep you updated.

Codefedants and Zeta announce live record

Codefendants and Zeta are releasing a collaborative live in studio EP. It's called Live From Red Lion Studios and it has six tracks. As per the band, "Six classic songs recorded live with our good friends @joinzeta as our backing band." The release is out December 12 and appears to be self-released.

Perhaps interestingly, somewhat following the "tier priced ticket sales" of festivals, the band is pricing the individual variants of the LPS based off their rarity. The most common version, black vinyl, is priced at $40. The second most mare version sells for $80 and the rarest variant runs $100.

Billy McFarland announces new festival, tickets run $200 - $500,000

Billy McFarland announces new festival, tickets run $200 - $500,000

He's bAaAaAaAaAaAaAack!

Surely you know that Billy McFarland is the convicted fraudster behind Fyre festival, the "premium" destination festival that failed so spectacularly that people had to be helicoptered off the island of the festival. After that, he tried and failed to re-launched the festival a couple of times. This summer, he sold the name and related assets to Limewire for just under $250,000. McFarland was ordered to pay $26 million in restitution related to his convictions.

Well, he has got a new festival in the works. It is really soon- december 4 to 8. It's called PHNX and it's another premium destination festival in Diamond Cay in the Caribbean. French Montana is the headliner. a second headliner is supposed to be announced soon. Ticket prices range $200 to $500,000. The $500k option gets you: Private, 10-seat Challenger 601 round trip from Miami; The best villa on Utila; Private chef in your villa 24/7; Golf cart with 24/7 driver and local guide, plus 4 ATVs; The best boat on Utila with 24/7 captain; Bottle service to your boat during the Saturday and Sunday Festival; Stage access during the festival. Be with the artists as they perform; Artist only dinner; Private dinner and drinks with Billy McFarland on Utila before or after the festival.

The ticketing service has a very classy statement from McFarland, too: "To everyone saying play it safe, we got the islands. To all the internet NPCs claiming they live life, we are out here really doing this. To the people saying get a job, we are paying people back and supporting every f***ing island we touch. To the ones saying this is a normal vacation, you haven’t done a trip with me. To the ones saying this is delusional, wait until we drop the lineup. Let me show you Island Billy. Come live."

Apparently, there are only 400 tickets for sale. This will definitely go totally as planned.

Mike Huguenor's book about Asian Man Records gets release date

In 2023 Mike Huguenor (Shinobu, Hard Girls, Jeff Rosenstock) announced that he was writing a book about Asian Man Records called Elvis Is Dead, I’m Still Alive: The Story of Asian Man Records. Now, he has announced the release date for the book. It will be out on May 19 via Clash Books. The official description for the book reads in part,

”Sourced from over a hundred hours of interviews with musicians, producers, booking agents, label owners, writers, fans, employees, volunteers, friends and family, Elvis is Dead, I’m Still Alive tells the singular story of Asian Man Records.

In its first thirty years, Asian Man Records released over 400 albums, all from the garage at Mike Park’s parents’ house. Founded when Park was in his early twenties, the label has started and supported the careers of musicians across many generations, all free from the pressures of the larger music industry. It seemed things could even stay that way forever, until an unexpected email arrived…

Spanning early releases by breakout artists like Less Than Jake and Alkaline Trio, to albums that went viral on TikTok, every record has its own story. All of them connect back to Mike Park, the record label founder, who went from struggling with racism as a Korean American in an overwhelmingly white town, to his current status as international underground inspiration.

Written by Mike Huguenor, a musician who has seen the label from inside and out, this music biography documents thirty years in the life of a record label unlike any other—the one and only Asian Man Records.”

In conversation with Jeremy Dobski

Comedian and writer Jeremy Dobski loves to make people laugh. He has brought his well-crafted jokes and kinetic delivery to stages across Canada and the US, spreading the joy of human connection with him everywhere he goes. That joy of connection is also captured in his 2024 special Love Language. Jeremy will be playing his last shows of the year across Ontario and Michigan starting later this month.

Last month, Jeremy joined forces once again with longtime friend and collaborator comedian (and founder of Punx Can't Laugh) Gabe Koury to co-produce the second Punx Can’t Laugh Fest in Toronto. This year’s festival saw them expand to four days, which featured five shows jam-packed with hilarious comedians and rocking punk bands. Punknews editor Em Moore caught up with Jeremy to talk about this year’s Punx Can’t Laugh Fest, throwing shows on a pirate ship, incorporating storytelling into stand-up thanks to his animated show Para-Legal, and so much more.
