Lately, more and more bands are falling victim to something which is ranked near the very top of "things bands don't want to hear," right next to the term "sellout:" the sophomore slump. Yes, the dreaded fact that your favorite band's second album is chock full of monotony or a desperate-to-make-money change in sound is one of the most disappointing and depressing things that could happen to a band that released a rather stellar debut album. It seems as if bands in all genres are having a hard time capitalizing on the success of their first album as of late: Motion City Soundtrack, As I Lay Dying, and the All-American Rejects are prime examples. However (and each year we see an example of this), there is a saving grace, a band which completely goes against the norm to just deliver. This year, it's A Wilhelm Scream and their excellent second full-length, Ruiner.

this album is the proof that not all of the comtemporary post-hardcore/emo is crap. i don´t like too much that kind of lyrics, but, like rise against first 3 albums, im in love with this one. the double-solos are really good, the production work was amazing, the vocals are great, the lyrics excellent. really really a whole blast of fresh air in the punk rock of these days. Good review, but that retarded Strung Out comment fucking killed it. Even at their best AWS can't touch Twisted By Design or Element Of Sonic Defiance, not to mention AWS is obviously highly influenced by Strung Out. And btw, EOSD was a more than perfect mix of punk and metal... This is one of the greatest releases of all time! I can't believe a band could be this brilliant! I am addicted to this album, in fact I'm listening to it right now. It deserves more than 5 stars. I can't wait to see what else is to come from A Wilhelm Scream. Trevor Reilly is a genius!!! This album is beautiful and should be album of the year. I absolutely love Trevor Reilly! I like Ruiner much more than Mute Print, but Mute Print still kicks ass. Strung Out is only the most underrated band in the indie world today! They have never failed at anything. People like you who make this site suck! Get a clue. Its a bit darker. Still amazingly good though. These guys are fucking amazing, but Strung Out is still better. Sorry tiger. I didnt bother reading down to see if it was said. Look at that Wilhelm Date, who's that opening for them???? I bought this, it was overhyped and not that good. I'd compare them more to Bigwig than Strung Out. Either way, each one of those bands is fucking great and shouldn't be used as fodder to hype up one of the others. Each band respects the other and their talents and capabilities, so why shouldn't you? Cheers! Here's a novel idea, why not try to contribute something to punk rock instead of tearing down others that dedicate their lives to this scene? 'bigwig sucks monster cocks' Score is for THE Wilhelm Scream... you know, the sound-bite from movies. This band, however, is not very good. Smackin' Isaiah was horrendous. Good move by these guys to change their name to lose all association with... themselves. Anyway, this album is not that great, but it is a little better than what they've done before. So take that for what it's worth. you guys need to learn a little lesson from GCF Score's for NUNO and fucking AWS ... great new album. And let me just say, the song title The Kids Can Eat a Bag of Dicks looks hilarious when scrolling across my car CD player's display. The only reason this wouldn't be as good as Mute Print is because they have already used the harmonized finger tapping through the whole song in William Blake Overdrive. I think the general opinion from the comments is that this is a decent album from a good band that could've done a lot better (and have). this shit is fucking hilarious, watch it all the way through generally when there’s this much excitement (as in, you guys are all flipping out and calling each other fags every five minutes) over a CD that means that it’s actually pretty good. i think I'll go buy this soon. Now, that's reasonable the only thing is is that these guys tried to hype this thing up like it was was "Super Mute Print" and you know there's no way they could top that record...the only hthing that turned me off with this band is that Trevor's getting kind of cocky about it. This band could do a couple things right now: does the band still use that cheesey high pitched hair metal sounding guitar? it was the only thing about the last album i didn't like and kinda ruined a lot of otherwise good songs for me. you know what i'm talking about? not the crunchy guitar, but the other one. its' not even the music it played, just the guitar sound. I liked the last album quite a bit, but this one has WAY too much hair-metal wankery for me. If I wanted gay ass guitar solos, I'd go back to my parents' house and dig up my tape of "Open Up and Say Ahhhh". So I just listened to this all the way through and here's what jumped out. In Vino Veritas was hilariously bad. Wow. Remember when A Whilhelm Scream tried to be all soulful and failed? Yeah, that just happened. Me Vs. Morrisey, Killing It, and The King Is Dead are all damn good songs. Overall this band and album are really good. I wasn't as impressed with this as I was with this as I was with Mute Print, but that's probably because I knew what to expect this time. Take my opinion with whatever ammount of salt you need though, 'cause I come from the "it's always time for harmonized guitar solos" school of thought. I'll take these guys over a ton of bands any day of the week. What is "Less Bright eyes, More Deicide"? They're playing a shitty genre to start with. I don't understand how people love bands like this and Choke. When someone tells you to check it out you totally expect something original and different, but it turns out just to be another noise-factory of a metalcore band. Strung Out may not have invented sliced bread but damn they are good at playing punk-metal. When I heard that first mp3 I was immediately turned off. Not bad....but WAYYYY overrated. Remember when Strung Out tried to play metallic and technical punk rock, but ultimately failed? Imagine if Strung Out had succeeded at the genre crossover, and you'd have a good idea of how A Wilhelm Scream sounds. Take this bitch fight objectively. Crooky's arguing against the band. Underground is arguing against Crooky. Insults get you no respect and I'm less likely to listen to your opinion, regardless of the press-release you call a review. probably already said, but this isn't their 2nd full length, it is only the second one on nitro. I got Ruiner for about 3 weeks now. Maybe the Strung Out comment was a little too much for some people but the latest effort by AWS is better than Strung Out EIO - at least in my opinion. BUT this dosent mean they are better than Strung Out by any mean. Anyway, it's a pretty good cd The King is Dead is just awesome. Great vocals, nice guitar play & riff and I DO THINK the lyrics are good. People need to calm down cause this is not SO vs AWS. No more declarations of album of the year. Saying Bigwig doesnt put out albums often is true, but its also true Bigwig's current musical library puts AWS to shame. Their best song is not better than Bigwig's worst. If you want to listen to a "punk" band with metal riffs, Bigwig is the band to listen to. AWS is just some cheap substitute.
