Most people agree that punk as we know it began in the Sex Pistols / Ramones era. The forefathers of the `77 punk movement were bands like MC5, the Stooges, and the Velvet Underground. With that said, MC5's guitarist Wayne Kramer has spoke out on the current popular trend of punk rock. Kramer told LAUNCH.com "Bands like Blink-182--and you know, I think they're probably decent fellows, I don't know them but, you know--to me it's just cookie-cutter, it's generic music that the record industry loves, you know? They get one thing that works and then they just hammer on that thing until everybody's so sick of it that the can't sell any more of those records… The idea of punk rock has been exploited and commercialized so that it's another flavour." Kramer's planning to do something about this. He's producing a project called "Beyond Cyberpunk" that will be released on March 27. The 15-song compilation will feature artists who rate in Kramer's eyes. This includes Mudhoney, Dee Dee Ramone (former Ramones), Stan Ridgway (Wall Of Voodoo), Downset, Ron Asheton (former Stooges guitarist), and Mother Superior (Henry Rollins's backing band).Source: Launch.com Article
