Ramones, the Clash, the Undertones, The Fall, the Smiths, more on upcoming tribute to John Peel

The BBC is reporting on an upcoming tribute to the late John Peel. The double album is due out October 17th, shortly after BBC Radio's John Peel day. Tracks on the CD will span Peel's whole career, from Pink Floyd and The Doors to The Ramones, The Clash, Joy Division, New Order and The Undertones. Recent artists donating tracks include PJ Harvey, Pulp, Belle & Sebastian, Super Furry Animals and Orbital. Of note is that Jeff Beck, New Order's Peter Hook and The Futureheads will also record a cover version of The Buzzcocks' "Ever Fallen In Love" as a tribute single to be released seperately from the compilation.

According to Warner, who is releasing the compilation, the album was carefully vetted by the family of the legendary broadcaster and portions of the proceeds from the release will go to charities including the Salvation Army, East Anglia's Children's Hospices and the Kariandusi School Trust.

John Peel day will be celebrated with two performances both on the day itself and the preceeding day. Artists scheduled to perform include New Order, The Fall, Super Furry Animals, Dizzee Rascal, Bloc Party, KT Tunstall and Royksopp.
