Shortly after announcing their split last week, R.E.M. has detailed the "greatest hits" collection mentioned in their statement. The band, who were together for three decades, was involved in the selection of the 40 song collection which includes music from their both their Warner Music Group (1988 to 2011) and IRS Records (1982 to 1987) output.
In addition to liner notes written by band members Berry, Buck, Mills, and Stipe, the album also features three new songs that R.E.M. finished after they completed their last album, Collapse Into Now: "A Month of Saturdays," "We All Go Back To Where We Belong," and "Hallelujah," which were recorded over the summer in Athens with Accelerate and Collapse Into Now producer Jacknife Lee. The compilation is titled Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage (1982 - 2011) and is due out November 15, 2011 via Warner Music Group
R.E.M. was a seminal and influential part of the alternative and college rock scenes of the 1980s and 1990s, and helped lead the way for many others to break through to the mainstream. Their fifteenth and final album, Collapse Into Now, was released earlier this year.
