Q: What bands would you like to make a split record together?

A: Three way split- Melvins/Melvins Lite/ Melvins 1983.

But for real, for most split records, I usually only listen to the band that I really like more than once. I'll usually give the other side a spin, be like "meh" and not spin it again. I sort of feel like the split record rarely introduces me to new bands, and I'd rather just have a whole record by the band that I like.

I think the idea with split records is that the two sides are supposed to work off of each other, but to me, a lot of the time they just feel like two bands slapped together. The big exception is reggae, of course, where they sometimes put a deejay or different version of the A-side song on the b-side. I love that, because it plays off of the first side. Splits where there are two bands that don't do anything with each other don't seem to have a purpose.

That said, I LOVE collaborative splits, where both bands are on both sides, with one band being given focus on each side. The Mischief Brew/ Franz Nicolay splits are always awesome. The Clash/Mikey Dread splits might be the best splits ever. I like the Melvins Sugar daddy splits, but that's usually just because I happen to like both bands.

I mean, I'm not going to cry about a split record, but usually, I just want a full record from a band that I like.
