Today, Punknews is pleased to debut the new album by Italy's Vonneumann.
Norn is the kind of album that feels pulled from the future. Taking the sharp attack of Devo and combining it with the freeform intricacy of Mike Watt, the album feels like it would fit on a starship dancehall. The twist becomes even tighter when the band shifts from energetic, rhythmic cycles to arrhythmic sinister patterns.
Speaking to Punknews, the band founder who simply goes by "fr" said: "NorN is a truly special album for us. It marks a completely new era for vonneumann: it's our rebirth. When we started composing for NorN, we were just emerging from what has been (without doubts) our lowest point in history: our drummer had left; our previous studio album had almost been completely ignored; we really didn't know in which direction orient the band. We had plenty of ideas, but weren't sure we were going to be able to give life to them. So we took a drastic decision. We decided to focus the work around what was at that time our weakest (or null) point: the drumset. And we tried something completely new for us: an attempt at funk. So we tightened up the drum parts, developed interlocking off-beat grooves while adding a bunch of analogue synthesizers in real time and our usual guitars. And it worked. After an intermediate period of great uncertainty, things started to flow. We were dancing."
The album is out this Friday and you can pre-order it here. Meanwhile, check out the whole thing below, right now!
