Hello everyone and welcome to Navel Gazing: your look back in the week in Punknews. I'm Bryne Yancey and I'll be your guide through some of the juiciest, most popular and otherwise noteworthy stories from the last seven days. Remember, every Punknews story is built from tips from our wonderful, good-looking readers, so get to submitting. Here's what got the strange, slow and old community talking this week:

With that, we hand over this Sunday evening to the Punknews community, where anything is possible, from the next amusing-then-overwrought meme, to the creation of bands and message boards, to alienating sports chatter. So talk amongst yourselves, spin some tracks in the Navel Gazing turntable.fm room and we'll see you Monday morning.

Here's your question and answer of the week from the Punknews Formspring:

Q: which musician has made you the most star struck upon meeting them in person? A: Star struck has always been an odd thing for me. It's subjective for everyone but I tend to find actual "Stardom" does not factor in for me at all. Back in 2000 I was selling t-shirts on Warped Tour and there were some huge acts on the line up (Green Day, NOFX, Weezer), all of whom I'd run into from time to time. Being in sort of an odd phase, I wasn't really that into any of the main bands at that time, so asking Billie Joe to move his chair so I can get by with a box of t-shirts wasn't a stunning thing to me. That statement isn't just to brag, but to note who I was absolutely star struck by. On that tour I met Chuck Ragan. It probably wasn't more than 3 words and at the time it didn't really register because I wasn't a HWM fan. After the tour I started to look into the band because they were so nice on the tour. Needless to say I was absolutely hooked on them. I kicked myself regularly for not taking full advantage of the opportunity to really talk to them on the tour.

Fast forward to 2006 and I have the chance to interview Chuck, post-HWM break up and pre-Solo record. I could not have been more nervous (if you check out the interview I actually completely forgot that HWM covered "Bleeder"…so smooth). This is a guy I saw every day for two and a half weeks in 2000 and didn't think twice about but 6 years of listening to his music and following his band had made me a total nerd, fanboy and speaking to him seemed like an insurmountable obstacle. Luckily it all went well but it was still stunning for me, not because Chuck was somehow more famous but he was such an important figure to me that I couldn't imagine he would talk to me.

I'd probably also get nervous talking to the dude from Third Eye Blind.

Here's your question and answer of the week from the Punknews Formspring:

Q: if I interview an artist, can I submit the interview into Punknews? even though I have no journalism experience? A: Yes and no. We're always looking for new people, even with limited or no experience. The best way would be to contact Rich and let him know you'd like to submit and interview for the site, we may or may not already have something lined up and eve if we don't your interview may not be something we'd run for various reasons (doesn't meet our mediocre standards, we ran an interview with the band not that long ago, no one cares about your uncles jug band etc.).

What we'd recommend is contacting us first and maybe we can help with the interview or let you know in advance if we'd run it.

We're always looking for new input and content. But, please do not contact bands/labels telling them you're doing something for Punknews if we haven't previously discussed it. 99% of the time this gets back to us and just makes Aubin sad and when Aubin's sad Adam gets mad. And when Adam get's mad, people die. I think that's right.

Here's your question and answer of the week from the Punknews Formspring:

Q: Do you think Brett Gurewitz is being completely geniune when he claims to sign bands he enjoys given some are obviously terrible? I don't want to believe he likes Falling In Reverse. A: I honestly think we're in no position to question his interest in the bands he signs. I certainly don't like every band he signs but I don't need to. As for Mr. Gurewitz personal taste, it's entirely possible that he likes bands that you or I may consider terrible.

Just try this exercise, think of running your own record label and being able to put out any band/artist you like who is still active. What would your label look like? Chances are it's going to either look exactly like another popular labels roster (all No Idea bands) or it's going to be a muddled hodge podge of bands who probably don't share the same fan base at all. Personally mine would have acts like: Third Eye Blind
The Holy Mess
Bomb the Music Industry!
Astronautalis
Adel
Comadre
Fake Problems
and a bunch of other bands who's fans may or maynot like each other. I'm not saying my taste is incredibly diverse or "underground" but if you like enough music you're bound to enjoy some bands that may not be liked in the same circles.

Here's your question and answer of the week from the Punknews Formspring:

Q: why don't bands like to read press about themselves? A: The bands I've spoken with either read as much of it as they can or try to avoid it altogether. I think that falls under the "If you discount the bad press, why care about the good press?" umbrella.

That said, reading press about you or your band seems like it could be very complicated. Say your band is putting out a new album and you release a new song and say, "This is the best thing we've done and it's influenced by (whatever)." You make that statement, that is exactly what it means to you. then it's out in the world and that statement is no longer yours. It's open to interpretation, inference and the mood of whoever is reading it. Someone may take that and completely throw it out of proportion or even take offense to it. And in the digital age I don't just mean readers, but every two bit press outlet who gets press releases and puts their, "special touch" on them. When that happens to everything you put out publicly, I can see it being very tiresome.
